Take Advantage of Those Cheap Flights

For some years now a number of the so-called “budget airlines” in Europe have been taking part in a fares war trying to offer the cheapest fares to a host of cities throughout Europe. It’s not unusual to see that one of the major low cost carriers such as Easyjet or Ryanair has an offer of return flights from Britain to Spain, France or Germany for £1 (approx $1.45). There might be airport landing fees and taxes to be added to the fare, but it remains an absolute bargain if you’re looking to see a number of cities throughout Europe. The downside of these cheap flights is that they often make use of to the smaller local airports rather than the more well known biginternational ones. This sometimes means that a flight that is supposed to be flying to a major European city actually lands some 50 miles away. There can be some plus-points with this situation, the smaller airports often provide a much faster turnround on check-in and luggage because they’re catering for a lot less flights. The downside is that transportation to and from these airports can be patchy at best and an extremely popular option is hiring a car from the airport. The following are some of the wonderful cities that we have visited with flights from the budget airlines. We’re confident that you will enjoy visiting any of these great, they certainly have plenty to offer the visitor to their country.

Glasgow, Scotland

Glasgow, once known for its hard, unforgiving living conditions has seen a Renaissance and has become a fascinating, architecturally diverse city welcoming a vast number of visitors throughout the year. The chic West side of the city is the home of the fourth oldest university in the United Kingdom. Situated on a hill in the middle of the Medieval part of the city, the students contribute greatly to the fun loving and vibrant atmosphere of that area. The budget carriers use Prestwick Airport some 35 miles (51 km) north east of the city centre and you will find an excellent road between the airport and the city centre. It’s a popular area for sightseeing, so you are advised to rent a car at Prestwick in advance of your journey. An uncrowded 30 minute drive from Prestwick along the M77 motorway takes you to the centre of the city. Glasgow is a perfect starting point for a trip out to the Trossachs National Park. A mere 20 km (13 mile) drive out of Glasgow and you might find yourself enjoying sensational countryside on the back of a pony, whereas a 30 mile (50 km) drive east using another excellent motorway will take you to Edinburgh , the city of festivals complete with Princes Street shopping, Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh Castle and the seaside.

Florence, Italy

Undoubtedly one of Europe’s most impressively beautiful cities, Florence is served by Pisa Airport, some 84 km (50 miles) west of Florence. Rent a car at Florence airport and you’ll be in position to take in the leaning tower at Pisa, the wonders of historic Florence and a selection of Europe’s most picturesque countryside, that of the disturbingly beautiful Tuscany. It therefore will not come as a huge surprise that Florence is high in the popularity stakes when considering European cities. Once you arrive at the city of Florence you will find that most of the city centre is traffic free thus preserving the many ancient architectural treasures and statues from the pollution and vibrations caused by busy roads. As a result you are overwhelmed by a feeling of tranquility as you walk from one monument to the next. You do not need to stray too far before experiencing the evil, ear piercing roar from the scooter riders of Florence. Apart from the Ponte Vecchio the remainder of the bridges leading to city centre are noisy, polluted places, thus giving us an added incentive to keep to the ancient alleyways and peaceful sanctuaries of Florence’s wonderful piazzas.

Tours, France

Tours, set amongst the famed Loire Valley chateaux but without a single chateau to its name! The ideal centre for exploring the Loire Valley famed for its amazing array of palatial residences, the city has a few charms of its own. Although the little airport is only a few miles out of town, you really need to hire a car at Tours airport in order to explore a selection of the most stunning towns and villages in the whole of France. Along the banks of the River Loire between Chalonnes and Sully-sur-Loire, a host of cultural treasures are presented for the visitor to enjoy. The Loire valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers beautiful countryside, historic villages and lots of flamboyant castles. During the renaissance the Loire Valley was known as the “Retreat of Kings and was a firm favourite of French royalty. Former working fortified castles were converted into palatial and elegant trophy residences and these are now the region’s main tourist attractions. The historic towns that line the river banks are a magnet to tourists from all over the world. Towns such as Blois, Chinon and Tours have so much to see and do whilst the most popular chateau is maybe that on the Chambord Estate. Throughout the region you will discover small, family owned vineyards selling a variety of tasty wines at budget prices. Keep your eyes skinned for the word “degustation”, which means sampling I guess, and as long as ‘Le Patron’ is not enjoying a long leisurely lunch you will be made very welcome and he will be delighted to lead you through a tasting of all his wines. Of course, it is vital that you take a tee-totaller as your driver, some of these tasting sessions can get very serious!.

Retire To Malaysia In Southeast Asia

Asia is a great retirement option for those seeking affordable yet comfortable living, without compromising on natural beauty, entertainment and great food. Malaysia could be the place you’ve been dreaming about. If you’re not familiar with it, Malaysia is situated on the lower part of the Malay peninsula, just north of Singapore.

East Malaysia is about 400 miles from the mainland. Peninsular Malaysia is more developed, with all of the major cities, and East Malaysia is where you will find large expanses of jungle, many rivers, and some of the best diving in Southeast Asia.

Most retirees would probably find Peninsular Malaysia more convenient for living, and East Malaysia good for occasional visits.  If you want to retire to Asia, Malaysia is as good a place as any.

Malaysia was a British colony until 1957, and has existed in it’s present form since 1963. English is spoken widely, although many other languages are spoken as well – various dialects of Chinese, Tamil (a south Indian language), Malayalam (another South Indian Language) and the national language, Bahasa Malaysia.

Malaysia is blessed with a pleasant, warm climate, inviting shorelines of white sands skirted by crystal clear waters. Lots of public and private hospitals, recreational/entertainment facilities and developed and quality education system are also available.

Malaysia offers a low cost, tropical paradise to retirees. The monsoon season generally runs from December to March, and hits the East Coast hardest- although rain is year round. Depending on where you are from, Malaysia can be hot and humid in the summer, just like Texas.

Crime is very low in Malaysia, few areas could be considered unsafe, even in the larger cities. Drugs are best avoided completely, since the penalties for possession are severe. The people are very friendly.  This alone makes it one of the best places to retire in Asia.

As long as you respect the local customs and cultures, you will not have a bad experience in Malaysia. You can see signs like the head scarves being worn by women that show Malaysia has Islamic roots.

People who want a little adventure in their retirement years, while still enjoying a decent standard of living would like living here. People who enjoy trying new foods – Malay, all sorts of Indian food, all sorts of Chinese food, fresh seafood all year would enjoy staying here. Same with those people who have decent health and who want to keep it that way by being active and curious.

Things are cheap in Malaysia so you do not need large retirement savings to live well here.

Fortunately Malaysia has a low cost of living and helpful tax laws, you can live cheap here.  This is a good reason to retire in Malaysia.

Another reason why some people want to retire in Malaysia is that it has superb healthcare facilities and highly-skilled medical practitioners. Yet medical expenses and insurance can be very cheap and affordable compare to other countries.

Malaysia’s cultural mosaic is marked by multinational traditions, originating from China, India, the Middle East, Europe, and the entire Malay Archipelago.

New cultural influences from Europe and China mixed with Hindu and Islamic traditions later in history. A collective but distinctively Malay cultural pattern has emerged from this blend. You can see it in the literature, music, dance, and other performing art forms.

Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia, where more than a million work and reside, and functions as the center of Malaysia’s political, commercial and social life. It is a city of delightful contrasts. The favorable climate accounts for the lush greenery and profusion of tropical blooms in a riot of colors. The end result is a unique blend of age-old customs and traditions; colorful festivals, songs and dances and a rich variety of foods to tempt the palate.

Credit cards and travelers cheques are accepted at larger establishments. Most banks readily accept foreign currencies like the US Dollar, Pound Sterling, Yen, Deustchmark and Franc for exchange into Malaysian Ringgit.

A family friendly cruise ship will have a program for children of all ages with a wide variety of activities to keep them busy and entertained. Since your children are aboard a ship with nowhere to go this is very important. You don’t want them to become bored with nothing to do aboard ship. You may want to see how many activities and programs each Caribbean cruise ship offers. This will tell you if they cater more toward families or adults. A few other things you want to look into is how the ship handles infants and toddlers and if they provide babysitting.

Singapore And Its Variety Of Food

Make any visit to Singapore and one of the first things the locals will tell you is not to miss out on the food. The Lion City is aptly titled the food paradise of Asia, if not the world. There are countless dishes that serve to tickle anyone’s tastebuds.

The main reason the country has so many different types of food on a small island is because Singapore has a multi-cultural and multi-racial society. With four main races of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian, it is no surprise that Singapore has become known as the Asian food mecca.

Chicken rice is a very common dish yet is hugely popular with people of all ages. The best chicken rice in Singapore is often sold in hawker stalls and not in expensive restaurants. It is a classic local dish that originated from the forefathers and not the result of any famous chef.

There are also many different types of Malay dishes in the Lion City. Nasi lemak is a meal that has an assortment of side dishes with white rice. The side dishes are a mixture of egg, chili, chicken, fried anchovies and otak otak. The latter is actually fish paste mixed with different local spices.

Nasi lemak might sound like nothing special. However, it can be taken as a meal in any situation and thus its popularity. It has all the benefits of being convenient, healthy and as the dish is cheap, it helps many locals save money.

There are actually foods from other foreign countries and cultures in Singapore. By being open to accepting people from other parts of the world to help build its economy, Singapore has also seen a growing influence of other foreign food cultures permeating their community.

There is a huge Japanese community who have made Singapore their working home. This has resulted in hundreds of Japanese eateries and restaurants sprouting up across the island and introducing East Asian cuisine to the locals. It might be difficult to find the best authentic Japanese ramen in Singapore due to the sheer number of shops available.

With the introduction of the Korean Wave, this other East Asian country has seen a huge increase of its culture being exported. They have undoubtedly also influenced Singapore. There is also a sizable local Korean community that serve their delicacies and the best Korean restaurant in Singapore can often be found in their midst.

Visiting The Brewing Industry Can Be A Pleasant Vacation

beer brewing system

You would have to live in a secluded community in order to have not ever heard about beer. The brewing industry does everything in their power to ensure that people are aware of their products and beverages. One way they do this is by offering tours of breweries. You can find out quite a lot of information about the history of each manufacturer and the role that they play in beer history. It may not be a vacation that you immediately think of but it is one that will definitely leave a pleasant taste in your mouth.

The one thing you should definitely consider when taking a look at the brewing industry is that there are many different places to go here in the United States. Sure, you could always go overseas but why not try sticking closer to home for your initial trips. You can save that trip to Octoberfest for another vacation time. If you are not sure of which city to hit first, then you need to consider what type of good beer you like. That can narrow down your choices considerably. Take for example the Coors brewing facility as an example. If you do not like Coors then you may want to skip that brewery.

One great beer brewing city to visit is St. Louis, Missouri. You can take a tour of the Budweiser brewing facility. Budweiser has a long history as one of the favorite beers found in the United States, yet if it is not quite your preferred beer, then you may want to try a microbrew in a different city. Many large cities have microbrew manufacturers that produce excellent local beers to suit any palate. You may not find an authentic Belgian beer but you can still enjoy new, refreshing blends. One place that makes a great beer is found in downtown Dallas. The Copper Tank makes a wide selection of microbrews that vary depending on the season.

There are plenty of places to visit if you take the time to look. This is a vacation that will not only be relaxing but it will get you away from the kids for a while. Take a break from the pressures of modern day life and take a look towards the brewing industry to quench your thirst for fun and entertainment. It may be a beer and wine tour in California or a trip to the mid-west and that famous arch to visit an iconic brewery. You will be glad you did.
